Use these 6 Roman piazzas to make your own tour of the Eternal City. If you can, do your strolling on a Sunday when the streets are quieter and the Romans are out as well. Here are a few of Red Maps' favorite Roman piazzas:
1. piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere is small square with a charming central fountain. The interior of its 12th century namesake church contains spectacular gold mosaic artworks.
2. piazza di Farnese is dominated by the Palazzo Farnese. Built for a powerful family in the 16th century, it has a facade designed by Michelangelo, and is now home to the French Embassy.
3. piazza di Pantheon has the famous ancient Roman temple called the Pantheon. Built in the early 2nd century, the Pantheon's most famous feature is the amazing open-air oculus in its roof.
4. piazza di San Lorenzo in Lucina is an elegant square and a great place to grab an espresso. From here you're only steps away from the designer boutiques of the via Condotti.
5. piazza di Spagna - While its iconic stone steps are perfect for sitting, you might also want to visit the Keats-Shelley House located in #26, to the right of the steps.
6. piazza Fontana di Trevi you'll hear the roar of this famous fountain even before you see it - the Trevi Fountain is huge and quite beautiful. It was designed by Nicola Salvi in 1762.
