Seeing Boston Like a Local

interior views of boston cafes and stores

We asked our friends at Boston's design-oriented BLACK INK shops, where to find cool off-the-beaten-path places to experience in Bean Town.  So when they're not stocking the shelves of their colorful and engaging stores near Harvard Square or on historic Beacon Hill, they might just be chilling-out at this short list of their-own-private-Boston.

Where to Eat:

Tatte Bakery & Cafe  70 Charles St, Beacon Hill
Fresh-baked goods, healthy nut boxes all in historic and scenic Beacon Hill.
Nearby Attractions:  The Black Heritage Trail.

My Thai Vegan Cafe: : 3 Beach St, Chinatown
Here's a place to have a refreshing light meal, before seeing a show at one of the nearby theatres.
Nearby Attractions:  Boston Common and the Theatre District.

Boston’s Best - You be the judge…

Burgers: The Met Back Bay:  279 Dartmouth St - Back Bay
Nearby: Copley Square

Hot Dogs: Lower Depths Tap Room: 476 Commonwealth Ave - Back Bay

Boston Cream Pie:  Omni Parker House Hotel Gift Shop  60 School St - Downtown
The famous Boston Cream Pie originated at the Parker House, which is over 160 years old in 2015.

Parks & Outdoor Spaces:

Rose Kennedy Greenway:  The city reclaimed acres of land by putting their inner-city underground (Remember the Big Dig?). Now you can walk along manicured winding paths from South Boston to the beginnings of the Charles River in the North End.
Arnold Arboretum:  South west of the city center explore Harvard University's entertaining and informative horticultural oasis with over 15,000 species of plants and flowers to see.  Bring your notebook!
Boston Harbor Islands:  Further Afield... across and south on the famous Boston Harbor are a series of lovely islands to discover.  They offer a great view of the city and allow you to experience a local wildlife, the bay and fresh ocean breezes.  Also here is America's Oldest LightStation (lighthouse), historic Fort Warren and beaches.

Thanks Black Ink!  In addition to the thousands of curated design items they stock, Black Ink (a retail institution) has been one of the greatest supporters of Red Maps by offering a full selection of our guides since we began publishing.
