Where to See Modern Art in Venice

Venice

What is amazing about Venice is how little this city has changed in 500 years and yet, it's the place where you'll find some of the world's most contemporary and forward-looking art.

Where to See the Art:

It helps that every year the city hosts either a modern art or architecture festival, known as the Biennales.  What we love about the Biennale is its original World Expo fairgrounds and the wonderful futuristic pavilions each country built that are still standing.

But there are two other institutions here that should be on your must see list:

Peggy Guggenheim Collection

The collection is among the most famous in the world, with Picassos, Pollocks, Brancusi and Calders, among others.  All set in the one level, never-finished Palazzo Venier dei Leoni.

Francois Pinault Foundation

The family that owns such fashion houses as Gucci,Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Puma, exhibit their vast collection of contemporary art in two historic buildings along the Grande Canal, the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana.  Works by Jeff Koons, Subodh Gupta, Pierre Huyghe, Sol LeWitt and Sigmar Polke.

Where to Eat:

Lattes:  Le Caffè Florian - On piazza San Marco (oldest cafe in Venice).

Pastries:  Pasticceria Tonolo - In the Dorsoduro 3764, calle San Pantalon.

Gelato:  Gelati Da Nico - In the Dorsoduro, 922, Zattere

Seafood:   Osteria Boccadoro - In the Cannaregio, 5405/a Campo Widmann.
