Madrid

Map of Madrid's Old City with Palacio Real and Teatro Real

Madrid is a magical place. The Spanish capital is home to some of the world's greatest art, music and food. December is the perfect time to get swept-up into its festive atmosphere of holiday lights, ice skating and beautiful markets.

See:

Along the prominent boulevard called the Gran Viá, is a wonderland of holiday lights and displays that are created by architects and designers.  You can walk this avenue from the Museo Prado through the historic city center.  Also see in the nearby luxury shopping district's Calle Serrano.  It has its own festive displays put on by the world's fashion merchants.

Skate:

There can be few more spectacular, urban settings, to ice skate in the world than the Plaza de Oriente.  Madrid offers you this winter time venue with the royal palace and the city's opera house as the back-drop to practice your double-axel. You can also enjoy a break from shopping by taking a twirl at the Plaza de Callao rink.  It is located along the Gran Viá.

Shop:

With all of its plazas, Madrid is home to many Christmas markets. However, the annual market in the historic city center at Plaza Mayor is the most famous.  So shop here and then wow them back home with Made in Spain gifts.

Eat:
