VISITING FONTAINEBLEAU

CHATEAU FONTAINEBLEAU
For a diversion, we suggest one day you take the 50 minute train ride out of the city, followed by a short bus ride (taxis are scarce) to the golden gates of the 1,500 room "hunting lodge," Fontainebleau. First constructed in the 12th century, it has been used and expanded by everyone from Henry II to Louis XIV, Louis XVI, and Napoleon. In fact, you can still see Napoleon's apartments and bed.

The palace's extensive gardens and lake are perfect for a relaxing walk-about. The town has numerous cafes to enjoy before your return to Paris. Fontainebleau is a truly special place to see.
